Sagging Jowls in Your 30s: HIFU, RF, or a Thread Lift in Seoul?
Explore Ultherapy PRIME, Thermage FLX, XERF, and thread lifts for early jowls in your 30s, with guidance on recovery and visiting GU Clinic in Seoul.
A softer jawline in your 30s can come from loose skin, tissue that has shifted downward, or changes in facial volume. For mild loss of firmness, we recommend starting with RF treatments such as Thermage FLX or XERF. For mild sagging beneath the chin and along the lower face, we recommend Ultherapy PRIME for gradual lifting. For localized tissue descent that is suitable for a thread lift, we recommend MINT or Aptos lifting threads.
At GU Clinic Gangnam, these options let us match the treatment to the change you want to address. The first step is to identify whether your main concern is skin firmness, sagging tissue, or lost volume, then choose a plan that fits your face and your time in Seoul.
Which treatment fits your jawline concern?
What you notice | Where to start at GU Clinic | Why this option fits |
|---|---|---|
Your lower-face skin feels less firm, with mild looseness | Thermage FLX | Noninvasive RF heats tissue to stimulate collagen remodeling and improve firmness gradually |
Mild looseness comes with changes in skin texture and facial definition | XERF | Its adjustable treatment modes allow us to tailor RF delivery to different areas and tissue depths |
Mild sagging beneath the chin and along the lower face is your main concern | Ultherapy PRIME | Focused ultrasound targets selected tissue depths; real-time imaging helps guide energy delivery |
A localized area of cheek or jowl tissue has dropped and needs repositioning | MINT or Aptos thread lift | Lifting threads grip and support tissue, with more recovery and aftercare to plan for |
These concerns can overlap. We choose between the options by examining skin thickness, facial fat distribution, and the amount and direction of sagging. For example, mild laxity with a generally less firm feel points toward RF; a specific area of descended tissue calls for a closer look at how much lifting is needed.
If hollow cheeks or substantial excess skin dominate the picture, address those first in the assessment. Hollowing calls for a plan focused on lost volume; significant excess skin warrants a discussion of surgical options. Noninvasive skin tightening is generally best suited to a small amount of sagging.
HIFU and Ultherapy PRIME: gradual lifting with ultrasound
Choose Ultherapy PRIME when mild sagging under the chin or in the lower face is your priority and you prefer gradual improvement without inserted threads. It uses microfocused ultrasound with real-time imaging, so the clinician can view the tissue while planning and delivering treatment.
You will often see ultrasound treatments grouped under “HIFU,” short for high-intensity focused ultrasound. The device matters: Ultherapy PRIME combines focused energy with visualization, while other systems have different features and treatment depths.
You can expect your skin to gradually feel firmer over the following months. Redness, swelling, or tenderness can occur, along with temporary nerve-related effects.
Thermage FLX or XERF: choose RF for loss of firmness
For mildly loose skin and a gradual improvement in firmness, we recommend RF as a starting point. Thermage FLX delivers heat through the skin's surface to encourage collagen remodeling. It is a useful option when overall firmness is the main goal. Both Thermage FLX and XERF deliver RF energy through the skin’s surface without inserting needles. RF microneedling uses needles and is a different procedure.
If skin texture and facial definition are concerns alongside mild laxity, start with XERF. XERF uses two RF frequencies and adjustable depth settings. This gives us flexibility to tailor the treatment to skin thickness and the area being treated. Both XERF and Thermage FLX are available at GU Clinic; the choice comes down to which treatment plan best addresses your priorities.
RF works across tissue depths that vary with the device and settings. Our guide to XERF, Ultherapy PRIME, and Thermage explains those differences in more detail.
Firmness and contour improve gradually over the following months. Your skin may look red, feel swollen, or be uncomfortable temporarily after treatment.
MINT or Aptos threads: choose physical support for localized sagging
For a localized area of cheek or jowl tissue that needs repositioning and is suitable for thread lifting, we recommend MINT or Aptos threads. Their cog structures engage tissue and support it in a lifted position. This makes thread lifting a different approach from the gradual tightening produced by ultrasound or RF.
MINT uses absorbable PDO cog threads. Aptos includes several thread designs, so the specific product and placement matter. At GU Clinic, the treatment plan accounts for your facial structure and the direction of sagging when selecting the thread type, number, and placement. Our thread lift guide explains how MINT and Aptos differ from support-focused Jamber threads.
Bruising, swelling, and tenderness can occur after a thread lift. Once the initial swelling settles, we assess the change in your jawline and whether any further care is needed as you heal. Infection, a thread becoming exposed through the skin, or persistent pain can occur, and an unsatisfactory result may require correction.
How do the effects, pain, downtime, and treatment intervals compare?
For concrete timing, this table compares Ultherapy PRIME, Thermage FLX, and absorbable PDO lifting threads such as MINT. XERF and Aptos have different treatment protocols; the figures below apply to the named treatments.
What to compare | Ultherapy PRIME | Thermage FLX | PDO thread lift, such as MINT |
|---|---|---|---|
Main effect | Gradual lifting and tightening beneath the chin and around the lower face | Firmer skin, smoother wrinkles, and gradual contour improvement | Physical support and repositioning of suitable sagging tissue |
When results develop | 2–3 months, with further improvement possible through 6 months | Some early tightening, then improvement over 2–6 months | An initial lift can be visible immediately; reassess the contour after swelling settles |
Pain and discomfort | Heat and tingling during energy delivery; discuss pain control beforehand | Brief pulses of heat followed by cooling; vibration and cooling help reduce discomfort | Local anesthetic is used; pulling or a foreign-body sensation may occur afterward |
Downtime | Usually able to resume ordinary activities the same day; redness, swelling, and tenderness can occur | Usually able to resume ordinary activities the same day; mild redness or swelling generally settles within 24 hours | Allow 1–2 weeks for visible bruising and swelling, even if ordinary activities are possible; some reactions last longer |
Duration of results | Around one year or longer in some patients | Results can last 1–2 years; annual maintenance may be considered depending on your skin condition | Results from PDO threads can last approximately 12–18 months; this differs from how long the threads take to dissolve |
Repeat-treatment planning | Check the response at 2–3 months and reassess maintenance needs around one year | Annual treatment is a common maintenance approach | Our current menu lists a 6–12-month interval; assess the remaining effect and tissue condition before deciding on another treatment |
The time it takes to see results is different from when you might need another treatment. With Ultherapy PRIME and Thermage, we assess changes over the following months. With a thread lift, we assess your contour once the initial swelling settles. Further treatment depends on how much of the effect remains and the condition of your skin and tissue. The duration of PDO thread results also differs from the recommended interval between procedures.
If your stay is short and you want to minimize time with visible bruising or swelling, we recommend starting with Ultherapy PRIME or Thermage. If physically lifting sagging tissue is your priority, we recommend a thread lift and plan for recovery and follow-up within your trip.
Planning your treatment at GU Clinic during a Seoul trip
We recommend scheduling important photo sessions or events before treatment. If you are planning a thread lift, allow time before your flight home for bruising and swelling to settle and for a follow-up visit. Share your travel and event dates so we can plan treatment and aftercare around your stay.
Before your visit, you can discuss your previous treatments and what bothers you most about your jawline with us in English through WhatsApp or Instagram DM. At our Gangnam clinic, we examine your skin and facial features before agreeing on the procedure, pain control, and any repeat-treatment schedule. If we recommend several treatments, we explain which concern each one addresses.
You can check options and prices in the GU Clinic treatment menu. Korean and international patients pay the same prices for the same treatments. Before you leave, confirm your aftercare instructions, any review needed before departure, and how to contact us from home.
